A bilaminar consisting of a piezoelectric ceramic disk mounted on a po
lymer disk was chosen to build an ultrasonic proximity detector in air
. The influences of the polymer and the ceramic thicknesses on the tra
nsducer's dynamic behaviour are investigated using finite element mode
lling, for various configurations. The influence of the type of polyme
r is also studied. Prototypes operated at frequencies higher than 200
kHz were built. These allowed detection ranges higher than 2 m, with a
cheap amplifier and detection circuitry.
