The temperature and composition ranges of liquid crystal and glass for
mation have been established for the binary mixtures of mesogenic sodi
um butyrate with non-mesogenic magnesium, calcium and strontium butyra
tes by means of differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarizati
on microscopy. The formation of a vitreous optically anisotropic mesop
hase has been found for binaries of sodium butyrate with calcium and s
trontium butyrates.
