Anecdotal evidence points to a tendency for dissociative identity diso
rder/multiple personality disorder (DID/MPD) to run in families. This
article reports on the prevalence of dissociation and other psychopath
ology in the families of 11 children with DID/MPD and dissociative dis
order not otherwise specified. It describes the perpetuation of violen
t behaviors and dissociative defenses from one generation to the next.
