This article provides an overview of cognitive science concepts releva
nt to an understanding of the process of dissociation and the developm
ent of dissociative disorders. Research findings from studies of attac
hment, affect regulation, mental states, memory, metacognition, narrat
ive, and neuroscience are utilized to present a developmental view of
the neurophysiology possibly underlying the subjective experience of d
issociation. Clinical application of the cognitive sciences can facili
tate an organized approach to therapeutic interventions with patients
with dissociative identity disorder.
