In the Combined Cooling System (CCS), an aeration system developed for
grate coolers by Chichibu Onoda Cement, only the stationary grate row
s are equipped with so-called air beams. This does away with the compl
icated high-maintenance, flexible hose connections to the cooling air
supply for the moving grate rows, and not only simplifies the entire g
rate cooler structure but also has the advantage that the capital cost
s can be reduced to about 65% of the costs for a grate fitted througho
ut with air beams, makes the maintenance work easier and improves the
service life of the entire grate. The CC system, which is only applied
to stationary grate plate rows 3, 5 and 7 in compartments 1 and 2, im
proves the efficiency of the cooler to an extent which is not in any w
ay inferior to a grate cooler fitted throughout with air beams. The su
pply of cooling air in the first two compartments was set at a relativ
ely high level so that the clinker leaving the kiln is distributed bet
ter over the width of the grate and to improve the efficiency of the h
eat recovery in the central section of the grate. To reduce the initia
l costs only one line of the stationary grate plate rows on each side
of the central grate section was fitted with air beams. This improved
the recuperation efficiency of the cooler and gave the grate plates be
tter protection from thermal overloading.
