Ecosystem management asks stewards to manage lands for commodities, am enities, and, importantly, native biological diversity. Aldo Leopold a nticipated this idea by some 40 years when he developed the concept of a ''land ethic.'' I illustrate aspects of ecosystem management with q uotations from Leopold's writings.
