Electropolishing of stainless steel under specific electrochemical con
ditions results in the formation, at the oxide surface, of hexagonal c
ells about 100 nm wide and a Sew nanometres deep. These cells, observe
d by near-field microscopy, are understood to be the impressions of co
nvective cells localized, during the electrochemical process, in the v
iscous shell at the metal oxide surface.
