Twenty isoquinoline alkaloids were identified in the aerial part of Fu
maria densiflora oc. In addition to bicuculline, densiflorine, fumarit
ine, fumariline, scoulerine, coptisine, cryptopine, parfumine, protopi
ne, and sinactine which have been found previously, the following alka
loids were isolated for the first time from this species: adlumine, fu
maricine, fumaritridine, fumarophycine, fumarofine, corytuberine, cis-
N-methylstylopinium iodide, stylopine, and two new 1-benzylisoquinolin
e alkaloids, viz, fumaflorine and fumaflorine methyl ester. The cytopr
otectivity of extracts of F. densiflora and F. officinalis, and that o
f protopine, cryptopine, and parfumine was tested on primary cultures
of rat hepatocytes intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride. The cytoprot
ective effect of the extracts is associated with the alkaloids.
