Abstract
How residual stresses in glass arise is shown. Two causes are examined : the thermal history and the ionic exchanges. The physical magnitude s that should be known for modelling the start of heat stresses are re viewed. Then the influence of residual stresses on the mechanical resi stance and on the fragmentation mode are described. Finally, the main applications for residual stresses in glass are mentioned.
