During a study of reproductive behaviour in four pairs of captive St.
Lucia parrots at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, an ethogram o
f behaviours and vocalisations involved in social interaction was comp
iled. These 28 elements are described and information on the diurnal p
attern of inter-pair, intrapair and self maintenance behaviours is pre
sented. Such studies enhance our understanding of parrot behaviour and
are useful to captive breeding programmes, since they provide a means
by which to assess the compatibility of pairs, and hence to improve c
aptive management.
