A Selected Ion Flow Drift Tube (SIFDT) operated at 300 K with helium b
uffer gas has been used to obtain rate coefficients for the reactions
of the highly polar ion ArD3+ with C3H8 and C4H10. The rate coefficien
ts, k(C3H8) = (1.46 +/- 0.15) x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) and k(C4H10) = (1.4
9 +/- 0.15) x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) are higher than the respective Langev
in limiting values k(L)(C3H8) = 1.24 x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) and k(L)(C4H
10) = 1.32 x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) by 18 and 13 percent, respectively, an
effect which is quantitatively explained on the basis of the interact
ion between the ion-dipole and the induced dipole of the neutral react
ants.
