Py. Bello et al., QUANTITATIVE APPROACH OF ANTIINFECTIOUS DRUGS USED IN LATE-STAGE AIDSPATIENTS IN A FRENCH HOSPITAL, Medecine et maladies infectieuses, 26, 1996, pp. 679-681
To describe the amount anal costs of anti-infectious drugs used in lat
e stage AIDS' patients in a french hospital we conducted a retrospecti
ve analysis of drugs used in those patients, during the last three mon
ths before death, in the Department of Infectious Diseases in Toulouse
, France, The follow up of the patients was at least of 1 year in the
Dpt, The study population (47 patients, 209 hospitalizations) was comp
arable with the local population of AIDS' cases in regard to age, sex,
and risk factors, The mean survival after diagnosis of aids was 2 yea
rs, The mean duration of hospitalization was 13,5 days, for an average
of 4,45 hospitalizations per patient in three months, More or less 5
differents drugs were used during one hospitalization, of wich 65 % we
re anti-infectious. Anti-parasitic drugs accounted for 35 % (antimycot
ic 13 %, anti-toxoplasmic 13 %, anti-pneumocystis 8 %) - Antibiotics f
or 18 % (Broad spectrum 10,5 %, anti-MAC 7 %, anti-tuberculosis 1 %)-
Anti-viral drugs for 12 % (anti-CMV 5,5 %, anti-HSV 4 %, anti-HIV 3 %)
, This quantitative approach takes into account the load of anti-infec
tious drugs and their respective costs in the health care expenditure
at the late stage of AIDS.
