Abstract
We present an analytical proof of the equivalence of scanning near-fie ld optical images of small objects obtained by two alternative operati ng modes: (1) scanning at a constant distance from the mean plane of t he surface and recording the detected intensity (constant-height image s) and (2) keeping the detected intensity constant and recording the v ertical motion of the tip (constant-intensity images). Numerical simul ations with homogeneous and inhomogeneous samples illustrate this resu lt. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America
