P. Boffi et al., ANALYSIS OF THE KERR PHASE-SHIFT INDUCED BY OPTICALLY AMPLIFIED TRANSMISSION SIGNALS, Optics communications, 129(1-2), 1996, pp. 152-160
An analytical model for studying the Kerr-induced phase-shift by a sin
gle bit of a communication signal is developed. Based on this theory,
an experiment for measuring the impact of the Kerr effect on the perfo
rmance of lightwave systems in the presence of optical amplifiers is p
erformed. In particular, the setup permits a direct and in-line measur
ement of the Kerr induced phase modulation in an operating transmissio
n system. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical expec
tations.
