Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay, a Russian naturalist and ethnographer, visite
d several Micronesian islands in 1876 as part of his extensive explora
tions of the Pacific and Southeast Asia. This article translates his p
rincipal writing on Palau, which was originally published in Russian i
n 1878. Despite his short stay in Palau, Mildouho-Maclay collected val
uable information on physical characteristics, religious practices, po
litical organization, and material culture. He also gives the texts fo
r several important myths. His comments on the relationship between Pa
lauans and Europeans confirm that Miklouho-Maclay's orientation was si
multaneously evolutionist and humanitarian.
