Abstract
Human activity has destroyed or fragmented seminatural habitats, yet s ome carabid species have maintained, or even extended, their range. Th is can pastry be explained by their colonisation of manmade habitats. A range of manmade analogues for seminatural habitats exists, which su pports rare and threatened carabids. The fauna of manmade sites may be partitioned into ubiquitous and eurytopic species, and habitat specia lists. The conservation evaluation of manmade sites is discussed; a me thod based on the proportion of the regional species-pool of habitat s pecialists present is proposed. The habitats and management of manmade sites are compared with those of nature reserves.
