In the present paper, the tribological behaviors of gadolinium dialkyl
dithiophosphate (GdDDP) were evaluated on friction testers. Thereafter
, the tribochemistry of GdDDP were investigated through scanning elect
ron microscopy (SEM), Anger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray phot
oelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that GdDDP possess
es very good antiwear and friction-reducting capacities; the boundary
film and the diffusion layer with metallic gadolinium, phosphate and o
rgano-sulfide played dominant roles in reducing friction and wear.
