University of Nebraska Press's Bison Book reprint line has flourished
since its introduction in 1959, bringing titles that might otherwise h
ave been restricted to purely 'scholarly' audiences into the popular s
phere. Paperback reprints were remarkable in the 1950s, hut their low
price, attractive covers, and appealing contents have over the years a
llowed more than 2000 Bisons to hit the trail. The series is identifie
d with themes of the American West, but Bisons come from many fields,
including music, philosophy, military history, and anthropology. Each
Bison Book goes through careful rights searches and financial analysis
, and most require that a new introduction is written to frame the con
text. Attention to advertising and publicity ensure that the Bisons co
ntinue to bring in a substantial portion of University of Nebraska Pre
ss's sales each year.
