The P K beta emission spectra in fluorescence from ZrP, NbP, MoP, HfP,
TaP, WP, AgP2, CdP2, Mn3P2, Cd3P2 and GaAs1-xPx for 0.2 less than or
equal to x less than or equal to 1 are measured with a high-resolution
two-crystal vacuum spectrometer equipped with Ge(111) crystals. The i
nfluence of metal atoms appears distinctly in the P K beta emission sp
ectra of transition-metal phosphides. The effect of arsenic atoms appe
ars slightly in the P K beta emission spectra of GaAs1-xPx. The P K be
ta emission spectra of AgP2, CdP2, Cd3P2 and GaAs0.6 P-0.4 are compare
d with available P L(2.3) emission and XPS valence-band spectra on a c
ommon energy scale. It is shown that the P 3p electrons interact fairl
y with the metal d electrons in the upper part of the valence band for
MP (M = Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W) and Mn3P2; considerable p-d, s mixing
occurs in the middle part for AgP2 and in the lower part for CdP2 and
Cd3P2; and the Ga 3d states mb fairly with the P 3s states in GaAs0.6P
0.4.
