M. Rosenberg et al., UV-INDUCED COULOMB CRYSTALLIZATION OF DUST GRAINS IN HIGH-PRESSURE GAS, IEEE transactions on plasma science, 24(6), 1996, pp. 1422-1430
A scheme for forming a Coulomb lattice of positivelly charged dust gra
ins in a high-pressure (P > torr) gas is discussed theoretically. The
grains are charged positively by photoemission in the presence of a fl
ux of ultraviolet CUV) photons with energy larger than the work functi
on of the grains, but lower than the ionization potential of the backg
round gas. Methods for levitating and confining the dust using photoph
oretic forces (both UV and non-UV), gas drag, and electrostatic forces
are considered.
