Abstract
The possibility of using direct modulation without chromatic dispersio n compensation, in long distance unrepeatered systems over pure silica core fibre, has been investigated. Z.5Gbit/s transmission on such a l ow cost configuration has bt en demonstrated on 385km of pure silica c ore fibre (412km with forward error correction).
