The Great Flood of 1993 impacted 109 wastewater treatment facilities i
n the state of Missouri. Impacts ranged from minor operational difficu
lties to total inundation of the facility. This paper reviews the resu
lts of a detailed study of six wastewater treatment facilities in Miss
ouri. The study was undertaken to determine how the facilities operate
d during the hood, what monetary and operational impacts were experien
ced, what assumptions were implicit in the design of each facility wit
h respect to flood survivability, and how problems that occurred durin
g 1993 could be solved during retrofits or upgrades. The conclusion of
the study is that treatment facilities are impacted by hoods for vari
ous simple to complex reasons, and design engineers could probably pre
vent many of the negative impacts.
