Abstract
We have recently shown that the Semliki Forest virus (SFV) subgenome c ontains a translation enhancer region in the coding part of its RNA. T he enhancer increases the translation of the viral structural genes ap proximately ten-fold and thereby plays a key role in virus assembly. I n this study we conclusively show that this translation enhancer repre sents an adaptation to the environment in the virus-infected cell.
