The reduced Bethe-Salpeter equation with scalar confinement and vector
gluon exchange is applied to quark-antiquark bound states. The so-cal
led intrinsic flaw of the Salpeter equation with static scalar confine
ment is investigated. The notorious problem of narrow level spacings i
s found to be remedied by taking into consideration the retardation ef
fect of scalar confinement. A good fit for the mass spectrum of both h
eavy and light quarkonium states is then obtained.
