Conditions of synthesis of water-soluble derivatives of epichlorhydrin
e through ionic copolymerization with maleic and phthalic-anhydride in
the presence of a special initiator have been found out. Synthesized
copolymers with molecular weight from 3000 to 12000 do not possess any
sizing effect of their own but improve paper strength by 10 divided b
y 20%. When used simultaneously with rosin size, they have synergetic
effect and impart increased hydrophobicity and higher strength to the
paper.
