The first descriptions of the fossil plants included in the so-called
'Juan de Morales Flora', from the classic locality Quebrada Juan de Mo
rales, ca. 75 km east of Iquique, Tarapaca Region, Chile, are given. T
he flora is composed of Neocalamites sp., Dictyophyllum sp,, Gleicheni
tes sp., Zamites antarcticus Halle, Zamites cf. pusillus Halle, Zamite
s sp., Anomozamites sp., Brachyphyllum sp. and an incertae sedis seed.
Stratigraphically, the flora is located in the upper section of the C
hacarilla Formation, composed mainly of red sandstones and siltites of
continental origin, The generally accepted Jurassic age of the flora
is confirmed, and herein restricted to the Middle Jurassic.
