Vibrio hollisae is a pathogenic Vibrio species known to cause gastroen
teritis in humans after the consumption of shellfish. All cases of inf
ection reported previously were restricted to the Atlantic and Pacific
coasts of the United States. A case of gastroenteritis and bacteremia
in a previously healthy 76-year-old man who ate cockles from the Quib
eron Bay in Brittany, France, is described. This is the first report o
f Vibrio hollisae infection in Europe.
