Abstract
Surface treatment by laser and electron beam irradiation results in si gnificant improvement in fatigue crack growth resistance of alloy stee ls and Armco iron. The beneficial effect is due to extensive crack clo sure as a result of compressive residual stresses introduced during su rface treatment. The crack growth is structure sensitive at low Delta K levels.
