Magneto-optical intersubband absorption of a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum-w
ell structure subjected to a static in-plane magnetic field is calcula
ted on the basis of a nonlocal local-field formalism. Starting with a
self-consistent integral equation for the local field and taking into
account the electron-wave-number dependence of the wave functions, one
derives the optical absorption coefficient of the quantum well. With
the study being limited to the case in which the p-polarized external
electromagnetic wave propagates in the direction perpendicular to the
applied magnetic field, it is shown that the absorption peak that is d
ue to the intersubband transition within the conduction band is upward
shifted with an increase in the magnetic field. This result is attrib
uted to the energy separation between the diamagnetic-shifted subbands
. Local-field calculations also show that the absorption line is broad
ened and that the peak absorption coefficient is reduced with the appl
ied magnetic field. These effects are partly due to the nonparallel su
bband energy dispersions of the quantum-well structure. (C) 1996 Optic
