M. Sipper et M. Tomassini, GENERATING PARALLEL RANDOM NUMBER GENERATORS BY CELLULAR PROGRAMMING, International journal of modern physics C, 7(2), 1996, pp. 181-190
Random numbers are needed in a variety of applications, yet finding go
od random number generators is a difficult task. In this paper non-uni
form cellular automata (CA) are studied, presenting the cellular progr
amming algorithm for co-evolving such CAs to perform computations. The
algorithm is applied to the evolution of random number generators; ou
r results suggest that evolved generators are at least as good as prev
iously described CAs, with notable advantages arising from the existen
ce of a ''tunable'' algorithm for obtaining random number generators.
