Jj. Hernandez et al., ESTIMATING EXCLUSION LIMITS IN PROSPECTIVE STUDIES OF SEARCHES, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 378(1-2), 1996, pp. 301-304
We discuss the procedures used in studies of a prospective nature to e
stimate the minimum sample size (or luminosity) needed from a statisti
cal point of view to put exclusion limits to a given signal. We show h
ow such limits should be computed in the most general way and compare
the results to other more restricted approaches. This allows us to poi
nt out some ambiguities in the way prospective estimation of exclusion
limits is sometimes carried out.
