Abstract
We present a feasibility study of using sapphire beamsplitters and tes t masses in laser interferometer gravitational wave detectors. The int ernal thermal noise, optical losses and birefringence effects are anal ysed. Suspension losses are investigated. Experimental data on birefri ngence is presented. The conclusions are generally positive.
