An experiment was conducted during rainy (kharif) season of 1991 and 1
992 on chemical weed control in rainfed maize (Zea mays L.). The poole
d data on grain yield indicated that metolachlor(1.25 kg/ha as pre-eme
rgence spray) and atrazine(1.25 kg/ha as pre-emergence spray) gave the
maximum grain yield and were at par with weeded control. Butachlor (1
.5 kg/ha as pre-emergence spray) was found to be the next alternative
to metolachlor and atrazine. Atrazine, metolachlor and alachlor were m
ore than 90% efficient in reducing dry weight of weeds. Both glyphosat
e and antilophos were observed to be toxic to maize plant.
