Zinc-manganese has consistently attracted researchers as potentially t
he most corrosion resistant zinc alloy coating but to dare is the most
under-developed and yet to be commercially exploited to any significa
nt degree. This paper reviews the current status of this alloy, outlin
ing the research that has been carried out, the deficiencies of the su
lfate-citrate based electrolyte system and the possible ways of overco
ming them. The corrosion resistance of the zinc-manganese system is al
so examined, with particular reference to its sacrificial protection c
apabilities on ferrous surfaces.
