This article reviews the dangers of aspirating foreign bodies of denta
l origin. Two illustrative cases are presented, including an unusual c
ase involving aspiration of an elastomeric impression material. The au
thors describe the techniques used to identify the foreign body. A rad
iodensimetric study of four impression materials demonstrates the diff
iculty of identifying most impression materials. the authors also pres
ent some strategies for reducing the risk of aspiration during dental
procedures.
