Abstract
The embedded thermocouple technique for measuring strand surface tempe ratures has been developed and used to measure temperatures on British Steel casters, Mathematical modelling methods have been developed to derive from these measurements information on spray heat transfer, rol l heat extraction and heat transfer from surplus spray water in the ga ps between rolls and sprays. The analysis uses an inverse solidificati on model. From the data, background heat transfer coefficients have be en determined for the surplus water in the roll gap, This coefficient is larger after the spray, where water lies in the gap between spray a nd roll.
