The present study developed and tested a structural model of work-avoi
dance based on a set of personality variables in a college students' s
ample. Path analysis of responses to an adapted Dahlback's (1990) scal
e, revealed that defficient control played an important role in work-a
voidance. This was due primarily to its substantial influence over the
construct, as well as to indirect influences mediated through fear of
failure and risk taking. All the intervening variables had direct eff
ects over work-avoidance, and all path coefficients were significantly
different from zero. Overall fit measures of the model were highly sa
tisfactory.
