Abstract
Johnson Matthey's advanced coating technology (ACT) effectively combin es the best features and properties of the platinum group metals and c eramics and offers the glass industry improvements in component durabi lity and process efficiency. ACT coated thermocouple sheaths are now a n established worldwide product. The technology has been extended to t he coating of forehearth consumables. This has demonstrated major pote ntial for improvements in glass making; it has highlighted the benefit s possible in the control of gob diameter, shape and weight and brough t stability to forehearth operation. Significant reductions in downtim e now provide higher productivity and lower manufacturing costs.
