The theory of the electronic transitions of iridium hexafluoride is br
iefly reviewed. Then, we present the ultraviolet absorption spectrum o
f this molecule in the gas phase over the 30 000-50 000 cm(-1) region.
Some new electronic transitions are observed. Their physical origin i
s discussed and some values of the nu(1)(A(1g)) totally symmetric stre
tching mode frequency in these highly excited electronic states are gi
ven.
