Surgical techniques were used to isolate the extrinsic bellies of the
styloglossus and hyoglossus muscles from the body of the tongue for ch
olera toxin HRP injection. An average of 53 styloglossus and 121 hyogl
ossus motoneurons in the dorsal subdivision of the hypoglossal nucleus
were demonstrated using tetramethyl benzidine histochemistry. Stylogl
ossus motoneurons were restricted to the rostral 25% of the nucleus wh
ile hyoglossus motoneurons occupied other regions of the dorsal nucleu
s.
