The stress formulas for dislocation arrays located at the interface be
tween two different materials are derived and shown to be simple gener
alizations of the well-known formulas for arrays in homogeneous bodies
. The results are given for arrays that consist of discrete distributi
on of edge dislocations, and for those modeled by a continuous distrib
ution of infinitesimal dislocations. The far field stresses exerted by
a discrete array represent the stress field of the corresponding cont
inuous array. The stress distribution due to an infinite dislocation a
rray beneath the free surface of a semi-infinite body is derived and u
sed in conjunction with an energy criterion to discuss a condition for
spontaneous nucleation of the dislocation array.
