Temperature-induced relaxation of the plastic deformation of bulk poly
(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is studied. The co-existence of low-tempe
rature and high-temperature components of relaxation is considered fro
m the standpoint of the structural heterogeneity of polymer glasses. S
peculation on the role of structural heterogeneity in the development
of mechanical and relaxation properties of polymer glasses allows the
development of scientific and technological approaches to prepare orie
ntation-strengthened and shrinkproof polymeric materials.
