Novel polymeric metal complexes of copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II),
and zinc(II) with poly[1-acrylamido-2(2-pyridyl)ethane] (PAEPH) have
been prepared and characterized by chemical and thermal analyses, mola
r conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and infrared, el
ectronic, and EPR spectra. The visible and EPR spectral studies indica
ted that the Cu(II) complexes have either a square planar or a distort
ed octahedral geometry. From the EPR spectra of the Cu(II) polymer com
plexes, various parameters were calculated. The crystal field paramete
rs (Dq, B, and beta) for the Co(II) and Ni(II) polymer complexes were
calculated and agree fairly well with the values reported for known oc
tahedral complexes. The infrared spectral studies showed a neutral and
/or monobasic bidentate behaviour of PAEPH with the nitrogen donor sys
tem.
