Some of the ideas and ideals we glean and put together from countless
hours of reading about, observing, being supervised about, and practic
ing psychotherapy seem, from the invitation to contribute this article
, to be deemed worthy of sharing. This article summarizes some of the
major lessons I have learned from consulting with thousands of patient
s, trainees, and supervisees in several dozen countries and hundreds o
f cities. It is painted in broad brush strokes as the intent is to pro

wn together from a varied, absorbing, stimulating, and never dull adul
t life as a psychotherapist.
