AN EXPLORATION OF AMERICAN LIBRARIANSHIP'S treatment of the Library Bi
ll of Rights in the 1960s. The authors introduces two vying interpreta
tions of the utility of the Library Bill of Rights, then examines the
conflict surrounding these interpretations in order to probe their imp
act on the viability of the profession. Findings are based on both pri
mary and secondary sources, including ALA's Social Responsibilities Ro
und Table Papers located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champ
aign, University Library Archives.
