B. Maureille, THE ANTERO-LATERAL ZYGOMATIC PROJECTION I N FOSSIL AND LIVING HUMANS, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie II. Sciences de la terre et des planetes, 323(3), 1996, pp. 267-273
The antero-lateral zygomatic projection, represented by an index (ISP)
, is on average strong for Inuits, small for Europeans and Neandertals
. It is very variable in Homo sapiens neanderthalensis before the isot
opic stage 5, archaic Homo sapiens and probably also Homo erectus. Alt
hough this projection is smallest in Neandertals after isotopic stage
5, the overlap of this population's metric variability with that of li
ving humans is such that the antero-lateral zygomatic projection does
not allow Homo sapiens neanderthalensis to be distinguished from Homo
sapiens sapiens.
