This paper suggests that 'telework' alters the context within which te
leworkers acquire knowledge. Because of sophisticated information tech
nologies, teleworkers have greater access to on-line information and d
ocumentation. This access creates the potential for higher explicit kn
owledge in comparison with the traditional work environment. However,
telework increases the physical distance from work and decreases the a
bility to socialize. Increased physical distance creates a challenge i
n the teleworkers' abilities to acquire tacit knowledge. Socialization
, mentoring, training and documentation practices, therefore, become i
mportant for maintaining knowledge in the organization.
