With the collapse of several important fish stocks in recent decades,
fisheries have witnessed the limits to productionist strategies of exp
loitation and stand in need of a more sustainable basis for their futu
re development. Using theoretical constructs from Gramsci and Bourdieu
, the paper examines Norwegian fisheries for evidence of sustainable d
evelopment. It concludes that while the Barents cod crisis provoked a
more realistic emergency strategy, the necessary political alliances a
nd consensus approach to sustainable development have not yet been est
ablished.
