Lb. Becker et al., JOURNALISM LABOR-FORCE SUPPLY-AND-DEMAND - IS OVERSUPPLY AN EXPLANATION FOR LOW WAGES, Journalism and mass communication quarterly, 73(3), 1996, pp. 519-533
Radio and television stations consistently have offered entry-level ne
ws salaries below those provided by daily newspapers, public relations
, and advertising employers. The data reported in this paper show an o
versupply of labor in radio news, television news, and daily newspaper
s. That oversupply probably serves to hold down salaries generally and
to explain the lower pay in television news in comparison with daily
newspapers. Television has many more persons seeking entry-level jobs
than available.
