Abstract
The thermal characteristics of Mus minutoides, the smallest rodent fou nd in southern Africa, that weighs only 8.06 +/- 0.14 g, were examined Lowest oxygen consumption values were recorded at 32.5 degrees C and 34.5 degrees C and averaged 2.98+/-0.15 ml O-2 g(-1) h(-1). Below this , thermal conductance was at a minimum and body temperature was regula ted by increased heat production. No evidence of spontaneous daily tor por was found nt low temperatures or when food availability was reduce d.
